Nvidia posted strong quarterly earnings Wednesday, beating Wall Street\u2019s expectations despite new export controls imposed by the Trump administration limiting the sale of some of its advanced chips to China. <\/p>\n
The powerhouse chipmaker, which is central to the artificial intelligence (AI) boom, saw its quarterly revenue grow 69 percent year-over-year, increasing from $26 billion in the first quarter of 2024 to $44 billion in the first quarter of this year. <\/p>\n
The company\u2019s data center business saw its revenue rise 73 percent over the same period, growing from $22.6 billion to $39.1 billion, although it fell just short of the market forecast for the segment. <\/p>\n
\u201cGlobal demand for NVIDIA\u2019s AI infrastructure is incredibly strong,\u201d Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in a statement. \u201cAI inference token generation has surged tenfold in just one year, and as AI agents become mainstream, the demand for AI computing will accelerate.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cCountries around the world are recognizing AI as essential infrastructure \u2014 just like electricity and the internet \u2014 and NVIDIA stands at the center of this profound transformation,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n
Nvidia noted in a press release that it faced a $4.5 billion charge in the first quarter due to new restrictions, which blocked the chipmaker from exporting its H20 graphics processing units to China. <\/p>\n
Its earnings per share came in below expectations at $0.81, which the company attributed to the impact of the export controls. Without the additional charge and related tax impacts, Nvidia said its earnings per share would have surpassed forecasts at $0.96.\u00a0<\/p>\n
